Toxic Textiles in Fast Fashion

Written by:

Extremely high levels of harmful chemicals such as phthalates and PFAS are being found in products from fast fashion giants such as Shein and Temu. These chemicals are endocrine disruptors that are linked to health problems such as obesity, heart disease, and some cancers.

They’re referred to as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment or in our bodies. PFAS are bioaccumulative, meaning that over time people take in more of these chemicals than they excrete. This leads to a build up in our tissues.

While fast fashion companies are often the culprits, these chemicals are prevalent in many common household items. PFAS are used for their water and stain-resistant properties, while phthalates are added to plastics for softness and flexibility.

Even if we don’t inhale or absorb much of these chemicals, we will eventually ingest them. When we discard these products these chemicals will get into our drinking water, crops, and poison our fish.

It’s imperative for these companies to be transparent about the chemicals they use and their quantities. They must also be held accountable for their negative environmental and health impacts. As consumers, we have the power to demand change by speaking out and choosing more sustainable options.
